In a high fidelity full flight simulator, the proper timing of the cues perceived by the pilot are essential to provide increased realism. Any pilot movement of the cockpit controls should result in accurately timed events that include instrument response, motion reaction, and visual scene change. Improperly synchronized events in the simulator can result in serious side effects that will impede proper training. Transport delay analysis has been the primary tool used to correlate the critical timed events across the simulator systems. This paper will start by covering traditional transport delay analysis techniques and some of their shortcomings. The paper will then discuss some key new advances in simulator technology and how it affected transport delay and its analysis techniques. Enhanced distributed computer architecture, electric motion, electric control loading, and the new visual LCoS technology will be covered as related to transport delay and some of the challenges they present. An improved technique to accurately measure transport delay in the new simulator architecture will be presented.
