Significant polymer material developments have recently taken place for a many applications. The material quality and performance demands for compounding fillers and alloying polymers have become more rigid and more challenging. Because material quality and performance is very dependent on complete and homogeneous dispersion of fillers, rubber or polymer mixed into the base polyolefin, the compounding technology has become more critical. The compounding aspects of fillers and polymers have become more challenging with some fillers having smaller particle diameters and/or lower bulk densities and some polymers are having higher melt flows. This paper covers technologies for polyolefin compounding to achieve excellent material performance and quality using Japan Steel Works Co-rotating Twin Screw Extruder “TEX”. These technologies include JSW’s unique mixing/dispersion technologies of “NIC” - a Special Kneading Barrel and “TKD” – a Special Mixing Screw Design. It also describes Nano-composites as a compounding application using these unique JSW technologies.
