Enhancing Students' Educational Experiences: Integrating Research into Software Engineering Education

Pervasive computing is emerging as the next-generation computing. Pervasive computing environments will be saturated with computing and communication capability, yet gracefully integrated with human users. Due to key differences between "software engineering for pervasive computing" and traditional software engineering paradigms, there is a critical need to refine the blueprint of software engineering education to ensure graduates of software engineering programs will be equipped with new knowledge and skills needed for software engineering for pervasive computing. To address this need, the author has initiated and led a multi-year project focusing on both theoretical and practical aspects of software engineering for pervasive computing. To help bridge the gap between software engineering education and practice, the project has special emphasis on integrating research into education, and fostering industry-academic partnership in research and education, cross-disciplinary collaborations in research and education, and lifelong learning. This paper discusses the project highlights as relate to integrating research into software engineering education at the dawn of pervasive computing.
