Vibration Isolator for Single Piston Hermetic Compressors - A Case Study

A freezer unit consists of four major sub-components, namely, the compressors, the condenser coil, the fan, and the evaporator. The vibrations produced by the freezer are usually dominated by the compressor and, in some cases, by both the compressor and the fan. Significant improvements have been made recently in the vibration performance of the fan itself, resulting in a challenge for compressor manufacturers to produce quality product. In this case, compressor-system interaction becomes a serious issue with reference to vibration generation. The vibration energy of the compressor is transmitted to the system through the suction and discharge tubes, and the mounting feet. The main object of this paper is to modify the mounting isolator such that the freezer has improved in vibration levels, using an analytical approach and verified with experiment. The overall displacement reduction of the compressor has been achieved up to 9 mils_(pk-pk). These results were validated on the actual freezer.
