The focus of this paper is on the use of two technologies to monitor a suspected overheating issue on unit 23 at Hydro-Quebec's Rapide-2 power station. Personnel consulted with a condition monitoring company, who suggested a non contact probe to monitor the slip ring and a contact fiber optic sensor to monitor brushgear temperature. Results confirmed overheating of the slip ring and brushgear, with slip ring temperature reaching 145°C. Corrective actions were taken by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) after test results confirmed overheating. Data collected after warranty work confirmed the problem had been resolved.
