Current "condition based maintenance decision making" of power transformers has not taken reliability and economy into consideration generally, which will cause large financial losses to electric enterprises. To solve this problem, a maintenance decision making model based on life cycle cost analysis was established to select the best maintenance strategy for transformers. After building the relationship between the fault rate and the comprehensive health index, a reliability evaluation model was formed to simulate the impact of different maintenance types. Considering the reliability and the life cycle cost of transformers, a new maintenance decision making model was developed to choose the best maintenance strategy based on the current condition of transformers. A case was studied and the results demonstrate that the proposed method offers an improved maintenance strategy.
