This paper discusses the development of a small form factor control system for unmanned vehicles. The OCU is an innovative system design being implemented using Quantum3D's Thermite, a small form factor wearable computing system. The OCU makes use of a software architecture and Quantum3D IData, a COTS software development tool that will support eventual safety certification of the OCU HMI and graphics software to DO178B standards, the same standards used to certify safety critical avionics software. The OCU software includes digital video and mapping capabilities and feature rich user interface capabilities. Rapid prototyping techniques employed using Quantum3D software tools have resulted in a reduced development timeline and reduced lines of code for the OCU software. This paper discusses the approach being used to support eventual safety certification of the OCU software, and lessons learned in employing a wearable computing architecture and rapid software development tools to create an OCU.
