Some organizations view Six Sigma as merely a rigorous application of the basic and advanced statistical tools throughout an organization. There are a number of Six Sigma programs that are simply repackaged statistical components of previous Total Quality Management (TQM), Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), etc., initiatives and renamed them "Six Sigma." It is, however, much more than just a revamped old initiative. To be effective Six Sigma must be more than the simple repackaging of old programs. This discussion outlines the similarities between the past programs and 6 Sigma with emphasis on the implementation of the tools and processes required for success. Particular attention is made to Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Risk Analysis (RA) and their application in the process.
