This paper investigates the issue of Desktop Search by applying web search techniques for indexing and ranking files. The technique is based on vector space retrieval model with standard TF*IDF weighting algorithm. The project has two distinct modules: The first module builds the inverted file and is responsible for storing and managing of the indices. The second module is the actual implementation of the vector space model that is responsible for the query processing. This technique returns results in orders of magnitude faster than the traditional desktop search engines like the Microsoft Windows search. The added benefit is that the results are also ordered and the documents closely related to the search query appear on top of the list.
