Many industrially utilized catalysts contain heavy metals supported on a porous refractory substrate. After many production cycles, chemical impurities in the processing fluids can either block the substrate’s pores or poison the heavy-metal active sites. Disposal of such spent-catalysts is of both environmental and financial concern. Many of the heavy metal components are environmentally hazardous and most are becoming exceedingly expensive. Therefore, seeking viable recovery methods has become a significant concern. Here, based on the engineering and design experiences of Hatch Ltd, a comparative overview is provided for the commercially viable recovery technologies and their real-world instances.
