Cameco’s Mining Division is using and developing new capabilities in membrane filtration technology to meet increasingly stringent effluent regulations, and to enable more water recycling and thus decreased water consumption. This paper initially discusses the reverse osmosis plant at Key Lake, started up in 1996 and recently expanded to roughly twice its original capacity. Recent technology development efforts at Rabbit Lake focus on membrane filtration of process streams with relatively high concentrations of dissolved species. Specific examples and early test results are described.
