Improving Your Intellectual Property Portfolio through the Preparation of Better Invention Disclosures and Patent Applications

The purpose of this paper is to provide material scientists and engineers with the tools to prepare better invention disclosures to help in intellectual property portfolio development. The paper will address issues relating to invention disclosure preparation from the perspective of a patent attorney. The first part of the paper will address the creation of an invention record and the concept of inventorship. The second part of the paper will discuss some of the factors that should be considered in determining whether patent protection is appropriate. The third part of the paper will address the requirements for patentability. The fourth part of the paper will describe the sections of a patent application to assist the inventor in working with the patent attorney to prepare a more valuable patent application.
