This paper explores potential software vulnerabilities in sensor nodes. With the emergence of new applications and the widely deployment of sensor networks, security threats in sensor networks are drawing more attentions among researchers and developers. However, threats against software in sensor nodes have not been well studied yet. Sensor nodes are architectured on embedded computer systems which are different from regular computer systems. The paper discussed the unique features of embedded systems. This paper conducted several case studies on format string vulnerability, heap vulnerability, indirect access vulnerability and IO buffer vulnerability. These studies show that existing defensive techniques are not effective or implementable in sensor nodes regarding security requirements or resource constraints.
