Carbon Dioxide in aqueous coal reservoirs has import implications for a number of different applications. Detection and quantification of CO2 for sequestration, enhanced recovery of methane and/or naturally occurring CO2 can give valuable information that affects engineering decisions. In-situ Raman spectroscopy has been utilized to provide laboratory quality spectra of reservoir fluids in aqueous geological reservoirs. These spectra can be analyzed in real time to quantify the amounts of CO2 found in the reservoir. This gives the ability to monitor, spatially and temporally the amounts of CO2 in the reservoir.
