Due to environmental regulations some utilities are modifying coal-fired power groups by installing Flue-Gas Desulphurization System (FGDS) in order to remove SO{sub}2 from gas stream. The implementation of a new FGDS to an existing flue-gas system is an important investment for a power plant, while the benefits are clear it is also necessary to make sure that new equipment will not cause any problem to the whole system in terms of production availability, inefficiencies or even damages to equipment by implosion incidents. The FGDS modification, from the flue-gas path point of view, implies not only the installation of an absorber but also the addition and/or modifications of some equipment like fans, valves and heat exchangers. It is also necessary to add or modify control loops as well as some new interlocks.
