OPTIMIZING THE ENERGY USE IN A REFRIGERATION SYSTEM

About 4 years ago, I started working on the challenge of developing condition monitoring tools for predicting refrigeration system failure. This idea came from a broad discussion that I had with a co-worker about rationalizing maintenance resources, and asset management. I published an interim report on my progress about 18 months ago. (Please see accompanying SMRP article). One goal that I hoped was achievable was to develop an approach in which we would stop requiring a human to visit these systems according to a calendar date, and start giving them at least a fair idea of what particular service was required based on a measurement of some condition. "Condition monitoring" is a practice among maintenance reliability people and it is designed to provide these hints. Condition monitoring really just means selecting and watching the critical values that would warn an interested and experienced person that some piece of equipment needs help or is considering whether to "head south" (destroy itself).
