Combustion of New Cyclic Energetic Nitramines: Flame Structure and Kinetics of Leading Reaction

The paper focuses on the combustion behavior of new energetic cyclic nitramines. Burning rate characteristics of the nitramines were studied in a window constant-pressure bomb at pressures up to 36 MPa. Temperature distributions in the combustion wave of HMX, its structural analog, bicyclo-HMX, and CL-20, were measured using thin tungsten-rhenium thermocouples embedded in the pressed samples. The data were used to calculate kinetic parameters of the leading reaction on combustion. An analysis of the nitramine burning behavior showed that variations in the nitramine molecular structure which increased thermal decomposition rate for the most part resulted in a simultaneous increase in the burning rate. The kinetics of the leading reaction on combustion of HMX, bicyclo-HMX and CL-20 have been shown to be in a good agreement with decomposition kinetics.
