A simple and highly-sensitive (-67dBm) fault monitoring and localization scheme is achieved without modifications to the ONU, by utilizing a low bandwidth (～2kHz) and low power (～ -7dBm) fault monitor and the high reflectivity mirror of VCSEL transmitters.
