1 INTRODUCTIONThe Kango Inlier at Oudtshoom (southem South Africa) covers an area of 140 km across and 14kin north-south (Text-figs. 1, 2). It can be described as an east-west elongated, northward overturned anticlinorium and consists of the lower Cango Caves Group (CCG), a carbonate-turbidite succession, and the upper Kansa Group (KG). The elastic KG is divided into the Vaartwell,the Uitvlugt and the uppermost Gezwindskraal Formation with its eastern equivalent, the Schoongezigt Formation.The Schoemanspoort Formation overlies the KG (Textfig. 3) and is in turn overlain by the Lower Palaeozoic Cape Supergroup.
