No-platinic and Low-Platinic Electrocatalysts for Fuel Cell Application

The authors studied no-platinic and low-platinum containing electrocatalysts for fuel cell application. The electrocatalysts were based on Pt, Ru, Mo, W, Pd and Au. In some cases Pt was alloyed with these elements and in others without Pt and also alloyed among the non-platinic catalysts. The Pt-M (M represents the non-platinic element) and no-platinic catalysts exhibited better characteristics for oxidation of fuels other than hydrogen. All the catalysts showed suitable characteristics for oxygen reduction reaction. The catalysts were synthesized by a thermal pyrolysis of the carbonyl compounds or by a chemical reduction of the chlorides of the corresponding elements. The catalyst performance depended on the particle size, distribution on the gas diffusion electrode, type of catalyst support, the alloy composition etc. The nanostructured catalysts were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the electrochemical techniques.
