In order to increase the performance of silk fabrics, especially their dyeability, silk was treated with a cationic modifying agent HSQA [3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl dodecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride], which was prepared in our laboratory. The dye behavior of the cationized silk was discussed with five leveling-type acid dyes. It was found that better color shades and good washing fastness were achieved after silk cationization with HSQA, and silk was possible to dye in neutral condition at 70°C. Furthermore, compared to the unmodified silk, the physical properties of modified silks such as moisture regain and tensile strength were almost not affected. The amount of positive charge on the surface of cationized silk increased greatly.
