The specific removal rate in a moving bed was not significant affected during the starvation period of 24 h. For a starvation period of 48 h, 33% of the initial activity of the microorganisms was lost. Shock loads have a minimal impact on the degradation rate since only 8% of reduction on the degradation rate was observed when a 1050 mg/L peak was introduced to the reactor. Results showed that the moving bed degraded more effectively the toxic metabolite generated during the degradation of the 4CP than the suspended bacteria did. This means that particular types of microorganisms are fixed on the carried, providing the robustness of the system.
