Japan is characterized by its precipitous terrain and poor soil quality, and has severe natural conditions susceptible to natural disasters heavy rainfall in rainy season and typhoons. Areas under land use restrictions are widely distributed throughout the nation.Excavation at steep natural slopes and the installation of revetments at embankments are often required. The multi-anchored reinforced soil wall method (MARW), a method developed in Japan, has a high seismic performance and features a high-standard of revetment work with lessened environmental loads from the perspective of the efficient use of surplus soils. Surplus soils had been conventionally treated as unsuitable soil. In recent years, however, the need to process such soil as much as possible on site has increased.Therefore, studies to investigate the way to expand the scope of application of the soils to the fill materials in this method are being conducted.
