Merseytravel is comprised of the Merseyside Passenger Transport Authority (MPTA) made up of 18 elected Members and Executive (MPTE) acting together with the overall aim to provide an integrated transport network which is accessible to all and will improve the quality of life on Merseyside. Merseytravel also works with its 5 district council partners to develop and implement 5 year Local Transport Plans which share this vision. Core functions include Transport Planning, developing new transport infrastructure for rail and bus. Merseytravel directly operates the Mersey Ferries and Mersey Tunnels. Rail services are procured for the Merseyrail Electrics network via a 25 year concession held by Netherlands Railways/Serco. We also support non commercial bus services (note most UK services outside London/Northern Ireland are privately owned and operated. The private companies devise their own routes and set their own fares). In addition, Merseytravel has a range of concessionary and prepaid integrated tickets.
