The remote hybrid testing method is a versatile technique for evaluating the seismic performance of complex structural systems by integrating numerical modeling tools and physical models among geographically distributed laboratories. It needs robust data transmission among computers connected by the Internet. The combined pressures of tremendous growth and massive security challenges have forced the Internet to deploy numerous middleboxes, such as packet filtering firewalls and Network Address Translators (NATs), which makes end-to-end applications difficult to communicate directly between two nodes in some current network environments, particularly in China. Based on client/server model, two communication frameworks for Networked Structural Laboratories (NetSLab) have been designed to provide across middlebox communication for remote hybrid testing. Communication speed tests were carried out in various network environments and the results show that the frameworks are satisfactory for remote hybrid testing over the current network.
