The paper presents the results of an investigation of the drained one dimensional compression behavior of an illitic clay treated with 4-10% (by dry mass of soil) typeⅠ Portland cement. The experimentation included both constant rate of strain tests and incremental loading tests on specimens prepared in the laboratory. Increasing cement percentages are found to cause a marked increase in the preconsolidation stress, a stiffer behavior in the initial recompression region, and a decrease in the normally consolidated (NC) K_0. The slope of the virgin compression line (C_c) also increases with cement content. The test results indicate that the structure generated by treatment of the clay with cement is of stable nature, with no significant destructuring produced by continued compression beyond the preconsolidation (yield) stress.
