Terrestrial backbone networks carry over 80% of Internet, voice, and videomedia communication globally. The increasing reliance on this network in-frastructure raises concern for protection and survivability against terrorist at-tacks. Research in the organization of complex networks has revealed thatcommunications infrastructure is vulnerable based on its topological and geo-spatial structure as well as its network traffic distribution and interdepend-ence with other systems. This vulnerability is magnified in the network back-bone and near its critical junctures, or core. Methodologies are needed toprovide dynamic, wireless bridging in the event of disruption of the backboneat critical junctures. This chapter characterizes the threat imposed on back-bone communication networks and their core and presents the feasibility ofapplying high-bandwidth, wireless, and reconfigurable communication linksto bridge data networks in the event of disruption and promote sustained sur-vivability.
