Yttria stabilized zirconia coatings are used in a variety of applications such as solid oxide fuel cells and thermal barrier coatings. The aim of this work was to process yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) coatings at low temperatures (~1000°C) using YSZ slurry containing nanoparticles. The films were processed by dip coating. The thickness of the coatings was varied by varying the volume fraction of YSZ nanoparticles and also by changing the dip coating speed. Although the coating made with 7.5vol% YSZ nanoparticles cracked, the coatings made with 3vol% YSZ were intact thereby indicating that drying induced cracking is a function of film thickness.
