Testing of Advanced Refractory Materials for the Aluminum Industry

Refractory materials have been tested for resistance to molten aluminum penetration for application in melting and holding furnaces. Silicon carbide based and alumina based materials have shown promising results in static cup tests. The tests were conducted at 1000 deg C for ten days in a steam atmosphere with molten Al alloy 5083. Post mortem analysis was conducted to study the penetration and identify the reaction products. Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and Cathodoluminescence Microscopy was conducted on all samples. Several field tested samples are also analyzed to help evaluate the long-term corrosion and penetration effects.
