This paper describes a new technique for aluminum alloy waste recycling by using ionic liquid as electrorefining media. The aluminum alloy waste was recycled in chloroaluminate l-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquids (ILs) at low temperatures. The aluminum alloy was used as anode and copper plate was used as cathode. This process showed significant advantages such as low pollutant emission, low energy consumption and labor requirement over conventional and direct conversion recycling methods. High purity aluminum (99.99 percent) can be obtained by electrorefining with homogenized size distribution. The characterization of aluminum deposit by SEM and XRD showed that uniform aluminum deposit was obtained with average size of 10-20 mu m.
