Theoretical predictions of the loss factor of fiber reinforced polymer composite plates have been made based on classical lamination theory and considering all laminate stresses. The calculations allow for arbitrary fiber orientations, laminate geometries and applied loading conditions. Results are compared with previous work by Adams and Bacon and others and differences analyzed based on starting assumptions. Calculations indicate that for a given set of material properties, the maximum damping may not occur in anti-symmetric or symmetric geometries depending on the applied loading. Results are presented for a variety of material combinations, loading conditions and laminate geometries.
