The wetting behaviour of high alumina monolithic was characterized by measuring dynamic contact angle of molten Al-alloy in a horizontal furnace at 1250°C using classical sessile drop approach. Metal droplets were prepared by in-situ contact melting while contact angles were measured after processing images using computer software. The study investigated the wetting behaviour of aluminium to monolithic substrates as influenced by silica/alumina ratio and highlighted the importance of additive levels in controlling the wetting behaviour of aluminium. Additionally, additive levels and their impact on reducing the dynamic wetting of high alumina monolithics were compared at the interfacial level. The SEM/EPMA analysis of interfacial products and thermodynamic calculations were used to explain the effect of chemical composition of monolithic on the wetting mechanisms.
