Densification Process of Powder Compaction by Cyclic CIP

This paper deals with a densification process in cyclic cold isostatic pressing (Cyclic CIP). Powder compaction was conducted by Cyclic CIP with spray-dried granule composed of spherical mono-sized SiO{sub}2 powder. The bulk density, pore size distribution and surface morphology were examined for the powder compacts. The experimental results demonstrate that two specific densification mechanisms operate during Cyclic CIP. One is a homogenization mechanism at a lower number of cycles, and the other is a packing mechanism at a higher number of cycles. The homogenization mechanism is discussed by using a multiple shell model proposed in this study.
