Operation of drinking water treatment plants is nowadays based on experience. By using modelling the operation can be improved, resulting in better and more stable water quality, better use of the installed infrastructure, lower treatment costs and/or reduction of environmental emissions. Phenomenological models are used that are based on numerical integration of partial differential equations, describing the process and the dynamic behaviour of the processes. The models are elaborated within the modelling environment Stimela, which is programmed in Matlab/Simulink?. To illustrate the value of modelling for operational improvement in drinking water treatment, three cases are elaborated: ozonation, activated carbon filtration and softening.
