COMPARING THE USE OF MARINE AND SATELLITE DATA FOR GEODYNAMIC STUDIES

Two satellite free air anomaly models, V16 and KMS02 were compared to free air anomalies acquired during geophysical cruises in two different areas. The satellite models are roughly equivalent in quality although the V16 model, computed from re-tracked data contains higher frequencies than the KMS02 model (~16 km compared to 23 km). Both models underestimate high amplitude anomalies (over submarine volcanoes for example) and are of poor quality close to the coast. In order to increase the quality of free air anomaly models, new satellite missions are necessary with new altimeters and closer track spacing.
