The water exchange between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea is controlled by the Danish Straits, where the flow is governed by sea level differences and hydrological control. In this study, the sea surface height of the North Sea -Baltic Sea system is analysed by the use of satellite altimetry and coastal water level recorders. TOPEX/POSEIDON and Jason-1 satellite observations are obtained by careful selection of correction methods and a state of the art local geoid. By combining the two types of observations, dynamical processes in the North Sea -Baltic Sea system are revealed in new detail. Regions with different characteristics are identified based on correlation analysis. A near-real time statistical water level model is set up for the area, and the performance is compared to the Danish Meteorological Institute storm surge model.
