The embedded devices like the mobile Internet continue to pursue new multi-media features with advanced networks. The emerging diversity of the content languages adds a new challenge in addition to the sustained challenge from the diversity of the execution environments in the embedded environment. The author describes the past three-stage evolution of micro-browsers in the embedded environment. In order to leverage embedded multimedia applications, it is necessary to provide software architecture for a wide range of multimedia applications for the future embedded environment, e.g. mobile handsets, game consoles, and automotive systems. With the sustained focus to the resource constraint, the author proposes an application toolkit framework that enables multimedia applications including browsing, mail clients, stand-alone multimedia players. The toolkit approach provides a footprint optimized multimedia applications in an OS-agnostic manner.
