Study on Kanzei-driving knowledge base model to support rapid product design

Aiming at the demand characteristic of some arts and crafts whose styles change fast and life cycle is short, the relation between the product characteristic and the Kanzei knowledge of customer toward product was analyzed, and the model of Kanzei-driving product design knowledge base was constructed to support rapid product design. In the model, object-oriented method was used to construct product models. SML (tabular layouts of article characteristics) technology was utilized to express the general product features(style feature, function feature, geometrical feature, material feature, colour feature, technical feature and so on), and main model and SML-based standard design elements base were created to be chosen and variated in the design process. The Kanzei measure metrics of design elements was established, and Kanzei measures of every design elements and product model (combinations mode of the elements) were evaluated according to the aesthetic principle. With HOQ (house of quality), the customers’ requirements were converted to the Kanzei requirement for product model and the design elements. The similarity algorithm of characteristics vector space model was used search the optimized product model and standard design elements from the design knowledge base to form the concept sketch and main model of products, so that the final designs of products could be rapidly completed by designers. The application in a jewelry company indicated that the method reduced average cycle of jewelry development, and improved the efficiency of product design.
