It is widely used of the A-type (or shape) oiling derrick with its unique structural characteristics. By employing the finite element software ANSYS, a typical A-type oiling derrick model is established. The loading behavior of the structure under static loads as well as the eigen buckling and nonlinear buckling are analyzed. The deformation, component forces and the stress distribution under the design loads are presented. And the first four eigen buckling modes with the buckling loads are given. Furthermore, the load-displacement curves and the ultimate capacities of the different models with or without initial deformation are compared, where the initial deformation is assumed as the first buckling mode shape, overall bending. The correspondence which can be further employed in the design of the new oiling derrick and the inspection of those in service.
