Flow variations around a 6-inch diameter meteorological mast were investigated using two- and three-dimensional CFD models and archived field measurements. The objective of this research was to characterize variations in free-stream speed and direction under several tower-mounted sensor configurations. The numerical models of the tower were run in Fluent v. 6.0 CFD software, with parameters chosen to best represent conditions commonly occurring during wind resource assessment campaigns. The field measurement data span several years at well-documented sites across the eastern US. The depth of the data allows comparisons between multiple sensor configurations. Results of the comparisons are presented as well as recommendations for future work.
