Color gamut mapping is one of the most important technologies in digital printing. Color transfers from a source gamut to a destination gamut through numerous media which have different gamuts. It is necessary to perform color gamut mapping to maintain a consistent color appearance in digital printing. Color gamut mapping approaches can be mainly categorized into device-dependent gamut mapping and image-dependent gamut mapping. However, we found that different kinds of digital originals had different color gamuts. And experiments were performed to obtain different digital original gamuts using GBD (Gamut Boundary Descriptor), and characteristics were analyzed in CIE1976Lab color space. The gamut mapping from source gamut to destination gamut was also implemented with the corresponding color gamut mapping algorithm. We found that the reproduction results were better, as different color gamut mapping algorithms were used to perform different kinds of original gamuts. Many special issues in color gamut mapping could be solved by researching the digital original gamut and its characteristics in digital printing.
