Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) neutral sizing is commonly used for improving water resistance and paper quality. However, many sizing problems often occur, such as “hysteresis” problems, sizing reversion, uneven sizing, etc. Sizing synergistic agents are often used to increase sizing efficiency and eliminate “hysteresis” problems. In this paper, cationic sizing synergistic agent with high charge density was prepared with diethylenetriamine, adipic acid, epichlorohydrin monomers and other chemicals by two-step polymerization. Moreover, the synergistic agent was applied in AKD neutral sizing of reed pulp and its synergistic effect was studied. The results indicated that this novel cationic polymer could obviously improve AKD sizing efficiency and water resistance. However, its synergistic effect was influenced by many factors, including pH value, temperature and dosage of synergistic agent. The optimized conditions are as follows: pH value, 8.0; temperature, 105 ; dosage, °C 0.05%; under this condition, sizing degree can reach 90s, increasing by 55.1%, compared with blank.
