We review the CMB spectrum and the upper limits on the effects which would distort the Planck black-body distribution, such as Compton scattering, reionisation, plasma effects. The experimental analysis of the angular anisotropies is discussed, as well as the physics pertinent to the different angular momentum regions. The connection between cosmology and the observed inhomogeneities and the determination of the cosmological parameters are summarised, as well as the underlying assumptions. The physical origin of the polarisation of the CMB is explained, and the first experimental results are recalled.
