Beside coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and gear measuring instruments (GMI) manually operated measurement systems come more and more into focus for the measurement of large objects such as large involute gears. The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) investigated and compared the measurement performance of gear measurements between a bridge type CMM, an articulated arm machine (AA) and a lasertracker (LT) by measuring the worldwide first large involute gear material standard. It represents one left-hand, one right-hand and one spur tooth gap with different helix angles typically used in wind power gear boxes. The large distributions from the calibrated values show, that the performance specifications of the investigated manually operated machines cannot be used as estimation for the task-specific uncertainty of gear measurements. Moreover, recommendations for users are given to roughly estimate the measurement uncertainties when operating with AA and LT.
