In wireless sensor network security is as important as performance and energy efficiency for many applications. In a recently proposed key pre-distribution scheme suitable for power and resource constrained sensor nodes, a common key is guaranteed to be found between two nodes wanting to communicate and mutual authentication is supported. However, it has a shortcoming that the time overhead is high for performing LU decomposition required in the key pre-distribution step. This paper proposes a new scheme which significantly reduce the overhead by avoiding the LU decomposition. The proposed scheme requires O(k) time complexity to find a common key while the earlier schemes of different approaches require O(k~2) when there exist k keys to compare. The proposed scheme thus displays a significant improvement in the performance and energy efficiency of the sensor nodes.
