Two case studies are presented, one aerospace and one automotive application, illustrating the effect of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) on the fatigue life of aluminum castings of varied qualities. The aerospace case study compares the effect of HIP versus as-cast material on high quality A356 investment and A357 sand cast plate samples. The automotive case study evaluates the influence of a specialized, more economical aluminum HIP process on x-ray scrap A356 steering knuckles created by both sand and permanent mold casting operations.
