Materials Used in Gigabit Cable and Their Electrical Characteristics

A great deal of work is publically available describing loss and loss mechanisms in printed circuit boards and connectors for high-speed data communication applications. However, equally important in the overall channel interconnect but presented much less are losses and loss mechanisms in the bulk cable used in high-speed cable assemblies. This paper discusses the various materials used in the construction of a high-speed cable, their properties and the loss mechanisms they create. It then quantifies the contribution in terms of loss percentages for each of the mechanisms based on analytical models. Finally, it provides measured data to validate the analytical models.
