A hierarchical control paradigm, based on existing control technologies, is presented in support of autonomous operation of space reactor systems for deep space missions. A simplified model of the SP-100 system is developed to study the control strategy of space reactor systems without loss of generality. The simulation study shows that a coordinated control is necessary to achieve the basic control objective of generating nuclear power to meet the requirement of power demand. Control coordination is identified as an important issue in order to maximize the operational efficiency of thermal-electric conversion and minimize the effects of disturbances on space reactor systems.
