Rheology is the science of the deformation and flow of matter. Many factors, such as the ease of placement, consolidation, durability and strength, are closely related to the Theological properties of fresh concrete. The more widespread use of advanced concrete mixes such as Self-Compacting Concrete has led to the increased need for the measurement of the Theological properties of fresh concrete on the construction site. This paper describes the technical issues encountered during the development of a hand-held version of the well established but laboratory based Two Point Workability Test and also investigates whether such a test is suitable for measuring the rheological properties of fresh concrete on site. The authors describe work that has been carried out to solve the problems encountered during the development of the tool. Areas that are discussed include the development of the embedded system, interfacing sensors and other electronic devices with the embedded system, the user interface for operation of the tool and the development of guidelines for the use of the handheld rheology tool.
