Electrical Resistance Welded (ERW) tubes are used for many applications in the automotive and energy business including oil and gas applications. In cases where seamless tubes are replaced, the ERW tube has a significant cost advantage. These are areas with critical focus on safety and environmental protection. For these applications it is mandatory to ensure high and constant quality. This circumstance requires the optimization of the manufacturing process as well as the introduction of new testing technologies. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) cannot only be applied after the final manufacturing step as an acceptance test, but can also be integrated into the manufacturing process as a process monitoring tool. This paper deals with the various test tasks in an ERW pipe mill and is focused on ultrasonic testing.
